The Supreme Court ban on felling of green trees not withstanding, more than 10,000 fully grown trees on the outskirts of Jammu city are going to be face the axe. The Forest Department has handed over more than 600 kanals of forest land at Sidrah to Jammu Development Authority (JDA) for construction of the New Jammu Township. The project was cleared by the state Cabinet headed by CM Farroq Abdullah in May 1998. The sources said the land was transferred following preparation of an inventory of the trees to be felled and assessment of their cost. The JDA has also deposited an amount of Rs 6.23 lakh with the Director of Social Forestry Project for afforestation.
