11 more UP districts declared drought-hit

LUCKNOW: Lucknow is among the 11 other districts of Uttar Pradesh that have been declared drought-hit by the State Government taking into account the rainfall quotient and the ratio of kharif sowing. The ten other districts are Chitrakoot, Etawah, Bulandshahr, Kaushambi, Pilibhit, Muzaffarnagar, Kushinagar, Jhansi, Bijnor and Mirzapur. The total number of districts declared drought affected in the State has now risen to 58. Forty-seven districts had been declared drought-hit last week. The decision was taken after a high-level review meeting ihere on Thursday. According to an official statement issued late at night, the high-level decision followed the assessment of the situation based on the rainfall quotient below 40 per cent of the normal and the sowing percentage. Chitrakoot, Etawah, Bulandshahr, Kaushambi, Pilibhit, Muzafffarnagar and Kushinagar were declared drought-hit as they received below 40 per cent rainfall between July 1 and 29. Jhansi, Lucknow, Bijnor and Mirzapur fell in the category of recording below 75 per cent of sowing. Recovery of land revenue and irrigation charges has been suspended till March 31, 2010.
