12 farmers commit suicide in Vidarbha

Twelve more debt ridden farmers committed suicide in the last 24 hours in Vidharba. According to the Vidharba Jan Andolan Samiti (VJAS), a voluntary organisation working for the benefit of farmers in the region, among the 12 farmers who ended their lives, were four from Amravati, two each from Yavatmal, Akola and Wardha districts and one each from Chandrapur and Buldhana districts. The deceased have been identified as Kisan Thakre, Prabhakar Bhokre (both Yavatmal), Gunwant Masudkar (Chandrapur), Sanjay Solankh (Buldana), Shrikrishna Kalambe, Sarangdhar Mohad (both Akola), Mangesh Kathe, Fulchand Khapre (both Amravati), Purushottam Barai, Sudhakar Pote (both Wardha), Gajanan Charathe, Vijay Ingle (both Amravati), President of an NGO, Vidarbha Janandola Samiti, Kishore Tiwari said. About 69 farmers have ended lives in March, while 86 of them in February and 80 in January, the release added. Earlier, 17 farmers took the extreme step in various parts of the region during the festival of Holi. Thus, the total number of suicides by farmers over the past week has touched 29. With this, the number of farmers who have ended their lives in 2008 has touched 235. These included 80 in January, 86 in February and 69 in March.
