12 killed, 34 hurt in thunderstorm in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: A thunder storm hit several parts of Odisha on Thursday afternoon killing 12 people and injuring 34 others.
According to the Met department, rain accompanied by thunderstorm lashed almost the entire Northern Odisha where the impact of the storm was quite visible in the state and the twin city also experienced sharp showers.
A twelve-year-old and a woman were killed in Rourkela while a youth was killed and another injured due to lightning in Keonjhar.
Fifteen people of a marriage party were also injured at Biramitrapur.
In another incident, a 24-year-old woman died due to collapse of a mud wall following heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds in Balasore district on Thursday evening, police said.
The woman identified as Sumati Das (24) of Chandansia village under Baharda Gram Panchayat died as the mud wall of her house was one among the affected in this district.
Train services in between Amarda-Basta railway station in the South Eastern Railway were affected for some time as uprooted trees fell on the rail track, said a railway official.
Reports from Keonjhar said that a man was killed by lightning at Naukana village in Anandpur block in Keonjhar district.
While one person was killed in lightning at Silijoda village under Damemari police station limits, a mining staff was killed in lightning at the Rungta mines at Badabil in the district, the reports added.
In Sundargarh, two persons were killed in lightning at Tisian village under Brahmanitarang police station limits.
In another incident, 29 members were injured, two of them seriously when lightning struck a marriage feast at Biramitrapur.
Reports from Mayurbhanj said that three persons including two girl students were killed when lightning struck Shyamakhunta, Suliapada and Badasahi areas.
Similarly, one person was killed and five others seriously injured when a tree fell on them near the Eagle Club in Khurda town.
Rain and thundershower lashed the state capital for nearly four hours starting at about 6 PM.
Several low-lying areas were flooded causing miseries for the commuters and the denizens.
There were also reports on power cuts in several areas in the city.
