Jamshedpur, Aug. 14: It’s never too late to learn. Shivani Mukhi (58) will agree. The sweeper, referred to as “angootha chhap” till now, had her first brush with the English alphabet, thanks to ADLS Sunshine School’s adult education initiative for its illiterate or semi-literate support staff. Like Shivani, 12 other employees of the school are taking lessons under the programme, which promises them freedom from illiteracy. “Mereko kuch nahin aata hai, abhi seekh rahein hain (I don’t know anything. I am learning now),” said Anita Nag, another beneficiary of the programme, launched in June-end with classes starting last Saturday. “Abhi ghar me naati ke saath homework karte hai. (I do my homework with my grandson),” she added. Under the two-year module developed by principal Indrani Singh and teachers, the staff will learn English, mathematics and Hindi every Saturday. The focus is not only on books, but also vocational training, civic education, healthcare and hygiene, child care, home economics and life skills. Quarterly exams —10 marks oral and 40 marks written — will also be conducted.
