15 killed in UP duststorms

LUCKNOW: Fifteen people have been killed and several others injured in duststorms in different districts of Uttar Pradesh, official sources said here on Thursday. Eleven people were on Thursday killed and 15 injured in eight villages in Soraon tehsil in Allahabad district in duststorm related incidents, they said. Four persons were killed in three villages of Unnao district late on Wednesday night, sources said. On the directive of chief minister Mayawati, the local administration provided an ex-gratia of Rupees 1 lakh each to kin of victims in two districts. The chief minister also directed to ensure free treatment to those injured in these incidents. Mayawati has directed the officials to visit affected villages survey houses damaged in the duststorm and ensure payment of compensation from the calamity fund. Allahabad reports said strong winds, blowing at the speed of 90 kmph, uprooted many trees and brought down several houses in the district's rural areas, burying children and women under the debris. Soraon tehsil was the worst affected as all the deaths were reported from there. In Holagarh and Sewaith blocks the storm devastated houses, uprooted trees and electric poles and destroyed foodgrains.
