Mumbai, July 18 The tree census 2008 figures may show that the green cover in the city has doubled over the decade, but several tree authority members have contended that 19 lakh trees are inadequate for a city with a population of one crore. A city bursting with development, where highways, malls and skyscrapers are mushrooming everywhere, 19,17,844 trees are still short, they assert.
Horticulturalist UN Singh, head of the Mumbai Nurseryman's Association and a tree authority nominated member, said, "Our city has an obscenely high pollution level. An ideal situation will be when there will be neutral emission and for this more trees need to be planted.' Singh has written a letter to the Municipal Commissioner and the Superintendent of Forest suggesting that Mumbai should follow the international standard of tree plantation in urban areas.
"For any construction in urban area, it should be mandatory that 5 per cent cost of the construction be spent on planting trees. For each new skyscraper that comes up, at least 80 trees should be planted,' he said.
According to the tree census, several highly-polluted areas like the K-East ward (Andheri East), P-North (Malad-Goregaon) ward and the L ward (Kurla, Kalina), house over 7 lakh people but the trees planted there is as low as 1 lakh.
