The biotechnology revolution is on the threshold of transforming the field of environmental engineering. Recent breakthroughs in molecular biology, microbiology and biochemical engineering are making it increasingly possible for environmental engineers to think in terms of prevention, as well as remediation. Environmental engineers at Stanford will be at the forefront of this new direction with the help of a $2 million gift from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. The money will help the researchers in Stanford's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) renovate existing facilities and set up new faculty with state-of-the-art laboratories.
