Ambernath: Two workers died and another two were left critically ill following a leak in a newly-opened chemical plant at the Anand Nagar MIDC in Ambernath. The police said the incident occurred on Tuesday morning when the four were working in the chemical unit situated on plot number 4. A chemical started leaking, following which the authorities asked some workers to collect it in a drum. The four men did so, finished their work for the day and returned home. It was only then that the workers realized something was wrong as they started feeling unwell. Three of the victims —Rajkumar Rajbhar (20), Seshnath Harijan (40) and Sayyed Ali Karnal Khan (30) —were taken to Ulhasnagar’s Central Hospital. However, Rajbhar and Harijan were declared dead before admission. Another victim, Angad Rajbeer (20) was admitted to Mumbai’s Sion hospital in critical condition. “Primary investigation shows that the plant started operating only a week ago and tests were being carried out when some chemical started leaking,” said C K Deshmukh, senior inspector at the Shivaji Nagar police station. “We are yet to record the statements. Once that is done, we will take action accordingly.” The police have registered a case of accidental death. “The viscera of the victims have been preserved for chemical analysis,” said Mahesh Chimte, assistant commissioner of police Ambernath zone. Sources alleged that the accident occurred due to the negligence of company officials, adding that they had not given the workers any safety equipment. None of the company officials was available for comment.
