The Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh had proposed a multi-level parking lot in Sector 17 around two years ago, looking at the increasing problems of parking in the area. While the problem has now assumed almost alarming proportions, the project is yet to see the light of day.
Not only Sector 17, with the number of vehicles increasing by the day, lack of parking space is one of the biggest problems in all sectors. Though paid parking lots are being increased and proposals are being studied to tackle the problem, the measures are not proving adequate.
The plan to build a multi-level parking in Sector 17 has not even been approved yet.
The project plan, with a provision for parking of 1,200 cars, submitted by a Delhi-based company had been rejected, as it did not conform to the bylaws. According to the plan, there were three storeys for basement parking and one for surface parking. There would have been two more storeys for commercial activity, with shops and a food court.
The Administration has recently asked the Delhi-based company to submit plans according to new terms and conditions.
While it is yet to be seen what the new plan will hold, the MC has planned to construct additional parking lots to ease the chaos at present. The work will be started in full swing after the rains.
With Sector 17 being the hub of commercial activities, the area sees a large number of vehicles. A multi-level parking is expected to solve the problem of parking to a great extent.
