In what will considerably ease the woes of air travellers in the Capital, the Centre is planning to facilitate checking in of luggage at 20 points in the city which also allow passengers to use a fleet of dedicated air-conditioned buses. The scheme will be rolled out in coordination with the Delhi government. The move will help ease congestion at the airport as traffic increases in the run-up to the 2010 Commonwealth Games. It will also introduce facilities that are available at several major destinations where checking in luggage is possible at tube and bus links. The Airport Link Express, expected to start next year, will comprise 300 AC luxury buses to ferry passengers from the city to the airport. The proposal is pending with the Delhi government and after it cleared, the ministry will take up the issue with concerned agencies like Delhi International Airport (P) Ltd (DIAL), Delhi Transport Corporation and Delhi Tourism. Given the new impetus to the preparations for the Games after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh replaced Mani Shankar Aiyar with M S Gill as sports minister, the proposal is expected to move fast. All infrastructure and service projects are now being reviewed on a monthly basis, and tourist-related areas like hotels and transport are top priority.
