The forest department in Maharashtra has finally realised that a major chunk of its land has been surreptitiously sold off and that sprawling weekend bungalows have come up on it. Actor Salman Khan's bungalow at Panvel was attached a year ago because it was constructed on forest land. But nothing has happened to the 20 luxury estates on these 787 acres of reserved forest land in Chinchvan village in Panvel, Raighad district. It is worth Rs 1,500 crores. Deputy forest officer Sunil Limaye said 20 bungalows have come up here. He has demanded that a separate counsel be appointed solely for cases related to forests in Raighad district. Popular weekend haunts like Alibaug and Panvel fall in this district.
