Italian Culture Minister Giovanna Melandri announced that 20 trees, more than 100 years old, will become "national monuments". Under the "Save the Trees Decree" the people who cause any damage to the trees will be forced to pay a fine of 20 million lire and could face up to two years in jail as well as restoration duties.
