Despite the rains pouring their bounty across the state in the last fortnight, some 203 villages in Kutch continue to be in the category of semi water scarcity affected areas. These villages are located in the talukas of Abdasa and Lakhpat.
These villages along with two talukas of Tharad and Vav in Banaskantha district continue to be a cause for concern for the state government.
Sources said that while Gujarat has received 51.15 per cent of its average annual rainfall till now, Abdasa has received just 75mm or 19 per cent of its average annual rainfall and Lakhpat has got just 51mm or 15 per cent of its average annual rainfall.
"It needs at least 125mm of rainfall to bring them out of the category of semi scarcity hit areas. We are confident that these areas will get more rains in the days to come," said an official.
He said that till then relief measures are continuing across the 203 villages of these two talukas. The measures include supply of fodder at concessional rates and water conservation works under Mahatma Gandhi National Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA).
"Ironically, very few people turn up for MNREGA works in Kutch but our offer is there," said an official. Till now, only 1,397 workers have turned up for 79 works under the scheme.
Meanwhile, Tharad has received 32mm and Vav has received 58mm of rainfall till now. The villages in these talukas are not placed in the semi scarcity-hit category as they had received sufficient rain during the corresponding period last year and scarcity is calculated taking into consideration the scenario of the previous year.
Sources said that Saurashtra has received 59.91 per cent of its average annual rainfall and Kutch has received 34.57 per cent till now.
