THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The 2008 edition of the South-West monsoon was weak over Kerala with 22 percent less rainfall than normal. The State received only 168 cm of rain from June to September, against the normal 214 cm, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said. District-wise, the southwest monsoon was deficient in all districts except Alappuzha, Idukki, Kasargod, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Thiruvananthapuram which received normal rainfall, IMD director K.Santosh said in a statement. In June, the State received deficient rainfall. Kannur, Kasargod, Kozhikode, Malappuram and Palakkad reported normal rainfall, whereas all other districts received deficient rainfall. The actual average rainfall received during June was 48 cm as against the normal of 68 cm. The State received 33 percent less rainfall than normal in July. Rainfall was deficient in all districts except Alappuzha, Idukki, Kollam, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta and Thiruvananthapuram, where it was normal. The actual rainfall during July was 51 cm against the normal figure of 76 cm. But deficient rainfall during June and July was compensated by the improved monsoon activity in August and excess rainfall during September, owing to the strengthening of monsoon winds and the presence of two monsoon depressions in the Bay of Bengal. The deficiency was reduced to -22 percent in August with Kannur, Idukki, Kasargod, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Thiruvananthapuram receiving normal rainfall. The actual and normal figures of rainfall were 35 cm and 45 cm respectively. In September, the State received copious rainfall making an excess of 33 percent for the month (34 cm was reported against the normal 26 cm).
