Officials of the Air Intelligence Unit of the Customs at the Anna international terminal seized 235 live star tortoises from a 26 year-old Sri Lankan national bound for Kuala Lumpur on Thursday. C. Rajan, Commissioner of Customs (Airport), said the passenger, Mohamed Mohideen Mohamed Murshit, informed the authorities that a stranger gave the baggage containing the star tortoises, which he accepted for a monetary consideration. The seized tortoises were handed over to the Wildlife officials. Further investigation is on. In another case, the Customs authorities seized gold bars weighing 700 grams from two persons who arrived from Sri Lanka. Mr. Rajan said the passengers Basheer Ahmed Ismail Arif and Mohamed Ismail Nizamudeen, both native of Ramanathapuram district, concealed the six gold bars in their bodies. Cases were registered against them on charges of attempting to smuggle the gold bars without declaring to the Customs by way of concealment.
