JORHAT, Aug 2: The current wave of floods has caused the inundation of thousands of hectares of agricultural land in the district. According to statistics, updated till July 30, available with the District Agriculture Office here, a total 24,349 farming families of 219 villages spread across the three subdivisions have been affected by the deluge.
The maximum impact of the floods has been felt in Majuli subdivision where 21,075 families of 187 villages in all 20 gaon panchayats have been affected. In Jorhat subdivision, the flood-affected area is Teok where 3,219 farming families of 30 villages have been affected. The least affected area is Titabor where only 60 farming families of two villages in the Elengi area have borne the brunt of the floods.
Jorhat District Agriculture Officer RK Hazarika told the Sentinel that 3,038 hectares of agricultural fields where xali seedlings were transplanted have been submerged. An area of 287 hectares where the seeds of the same rice variety were sown is under water. With respect to bau paddy, the total submerged area stands at 7,223 hectares as of now.
The vegetable area which has been submerged measures 129 hectares. Other crops in 305 hectares of land have also gone under water.
The Jorhat DAO pointed out that the actual damage can be ascertained only when the floodwaters recede. The present assessment is for the total agricultural land which has been submerged, he stressed. Farmers will be provided assistance after the extent of damage in terms of agricultural produce is worked out. "We have already placed a demand for 1,000 quintals of seeds of the Luit variety of paddy which is a short-duration crop,' Hazarika said. The proposal has been routed through the Jorhat Deputy Commissioner, he added.
In case of any shortage of xali seedlings, the deficiency will be made up through seeds of rabi crops.
The district has a gross cropped area measuring 1,74,252 hectares. The net cropped area measures 1,27,523 hectares. Of this agricultural land, 17,637 hectares have been marked as chronically flood-prone.
Jorhat Deputy Commissioner toured the flood-affected Majuli subdivision on Friday. She later held a meeting with the Majuli SDO and other government officials at Garamur and gave necessary instructions for providing relief and assistance to the islanders.
