2,500 trees planted in Aamby valley

Sourav Ganguly chief guest, host Subroto Roy missing On the occasion of World Environment Day, Aamby valley city, conducted a plantation drive at Aamby valley near Lonavla. As a part of the event, over 2500 trees were planted by residents of the township. Sourav Ganguly was the chief guest for the event. Arriving much later than the scheduled inauguration at 11 am, Ganguly, along with wife Dona, planted a tree and rushed back to their van. The cricketer refused to answer any questions related to cricket or the controversies surrounding his team in the Indian Premier League. Subroto Roy, head honcho of the Sahara India Financial Corporation Limited, could not make it for the event due to "unavoidable circumstances.' A message from him for the occasion said, "Aamby valley is about providing healthy living environment to those who seek urban proximity. Planting trees is an initiative to provide better and healthy surroundings.' Speaking on the occasion, Major General (retd) A S Rao, chairman, Aamby valley city said, "In 1998, we made a world record by planting over 1.25 lakh trees in just six hours. This year, we are planning to plant even more trees keeping in mind the increasing pollution levels and the need for fresh air.'
