Ahmedabad: Gujarat government has cleared a pilot project worth Rs 252.67 crore to make Ahmedabad slum-free. The clearance came at a meeting of the high-level state steering committee of the urban development mission, chaired by urban development minister Anandiben Patel. The project is to be executed under the centrally-sponsored Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) that was publicized by the Congress before the last state election under the name ‘Ghar nu ghar’. The state government has also approved a pilot project for Rajkot worth Rs 20 crore under the same scheme. A government official said, “On the basis of these two projects, a plan of action will be drafted for all major cities in Gujarat. In the other housing projects for Ahmedabad, being executed under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), the central share is 35%, while in the new RAY project, it will be 50%. The beneficiaries will have to shell out only 10%-12%, the remaining cost will be shared by the state government and municipal corporation.” Under the proposed plan of action, slum dwellers will be given property rights. Sources said that under the pilot project for Ahmedabad, 3,392 new houses for the economically weaker section (EWS) will be constructed and 1,649 houses will be built with public private partnership. In addition, infrastructure facilities will be developed for 2,402 houses and 924 slum houses will be rebuilt. Sources said the proposed plan of action will focus on upgradation of existing slums and prevent mushrooming of new slums. The state will survey and map all existing slums in selected cities and it will assess the rate of growth of the cities with a 20-year perspective.
