Thousands of people were evacuated from their homes in the southern Malaysian state of Johor as it reeled from its worst floods in a century, leaving roads impassable and disrupting trains to Singapore, officials said on Wednesday. Flooding was also reported in the neighbouring states of Malacca and Negeri Sembilan, but the situation there was not as serious. About 22,000 people in eight districts of Johor were moved into 163 town halls, schools and community centres on higher ground by early Wednesday, Che Moin Umar of the civil defence department said.
