Many people of ward 71, 73 and 74 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) fell ill today after consuming water supplied by the civic body. While civic officials said that eight people had fallen ill, locals said that the number was at least 27. Officials said that owing to a leak in the sewer lines of the areas, sewer water seeped into the drinking water lines leading to the contamination. People in the two wards fell ill after consuming that water. A team of health department officials was sent to the spot. Halogen tablets and oral re-hydration solutions (ORS) were given to the people. "Eight people fell ill after consuming the contaminated water. However, nobody's condition is serious. We will collect necessary water samples from the affected areas and carry out the required tests tomorrow,' Dr Deb Dwaipayan Chattopadhyay, chief municipal officer (health) said. For the past few days, local residents had been complaining of the water having a foul smell. Following these complaints civic officials started looking for a possible leak in the water supply line. The leak was detected in one of the lines on Sasi Sekhar Bose Road. "We have identified the leak on Sasi Sekhar Bose Road and repaired the same. Locals have been receiving clean water from this evening. We will keepan eye on the water supplied in these areas for another day,' Mr Bibhas Maity, director general (water) said.
