Efforts are on to establish windmills for power generation in areas where the velocity of wind is high in Anantapur district. Winds blow at a velocity of 45 km per hour from April to September in the district and are convenient to generate power. The Non-Conventional Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (Nedcap) officials have identified in a survey, that Ramagiri, Kadavakallu, Vajrakarur, Talarichervu, Nallakonda, Mustikovela and Penakacherla Dam are convenient for setting up windmills in the district. Eighty mw of power is being generated from windmills established in Ramagiri, Kadavakallu and Tallimadugula areas in the district. Companies have been competing to set up windmills in the district as the state government has increased subsidies this year. Private companies have been making efforts to set up 20 mw capacity windmill at Tallimadugula in Kanaganapalli mandal, 60 mw windmill at Nallakonda in Penugonda mandal and 20 mw capacity windmill at Penakacherla dam. An additional 100 mw power would be generated if windmills are established in the three areas. The state government has decided to enter into an agreement with companies setting up windmills to purchase power at Rs 3.10 per unit for 10 years. The government has also decided to give government lands for setting up windmills at subsidised rates. Private companies are not evincing interest to set up windmills in Vajrakarur mandal as there are no adequate government lands in the mandal and they have to pay huge amounts to buy private lands. They are also showing interest setting up windmills in those areas where there are no political and faction-related problems. The district Nedcap manager, Mr Kodanda Rammurthy, said private companies were evincing interest to set up windmills in some other areas in the district in view of the subsidies announced by the state government.
