AMC serves losure noticesto' major companies
Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) served closure notices to at least three major companies selling bottled water in residential and commercial neighbourhoods in the city after they failed tests for purity.
These companies held licences issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). AMC has asked BIS to cancel their licences. "We have ordered closure of these units and asked BIS to issue 'stop mark' notice on them to prevent them from using ISI mark on their product," said AMC medical officer SP Kulkarni.
Twenty-three samples collected from licensed packaged drinking water units by AMC health officials were tested at its central laboratory. Of these, three were found 'unfit' for consumption is received," said a senior BIS official.
AMC's action follows a TOI expose on how microbial organisms were found in samples collected, during a raid by BIS on one such bottling plant off Sarkhej-Gandhinagar road. However, BIS did precious little after that. "We will act against any complaint is received," said a senior BIS official The three which failed the tests were Rushabh Beverages, Sarkhej, Sai Corporates, Subhash Bridge selling 'Bhoo' packaged water and Neel Ganga Sai Beverages of Kiibernagar.
While tests conducted so far were only routine, all the samples collected are also being put through the stringent tests under the provisions of the Prevention of Food Adulteration (PEA) Act.
Meanwhile FDCA inspectors are yet to submit their report on investigations ordered by state health commissioner Dr Amarjit Singh.
Commissioner FDCA, H G Koshiya said, "We will proceed and press criminal charges against any company whose samples fail to meet the norms under PFA."
