A trailer loaded with about 300 spurious DAP fertiliser bags impounded by officials of the agriculture extension department of Mirpurkhas near Jhuddo town four days ago is still in the custody of Jhuddo police as the test result of the fertiliser samples sent to a laboratory has not been received. Officials of the agriculture extension department had impounded the trailer while three people were on board. The officials sent samples of the fertiliser to a laboratory for test. Sources claimed that the spurious fertiliser bags were belonged to a minority legislator and efforts were being made to get it released after obtaining a test report from the laboratory. However, Mirpurkhas EDO agriculture Yar Mohammad Khaskheli said that a case would be lodged against those found responsible for it after receiving the laboratory report. Meanwhile, hundreds of farmers staged a protest demonstration on Saturday in Jhuddo town against the agriculture department for not taking legal action against the owner of the spurious fertiliser. Led by Jhuddo Union Council Nazim Mohammad Aslam Kaimkhani the protesters carried banners and placards and raised slogans against the department. They claimed that officers of the department were not taking any action against those involved in the sale of spurious fertiliser. They told newsmen that officials were making deals with owner of spurious fertilisers. They deplored that business of fake fertiliser and pesticides was rampant in the interior of Sindh, including Mirpurkhas, but despite capturing 300 fake fertiliser bags the Jhuddo police and agriculture department were not taking any action against the culprits involved in the trade. They claimed that fertiliser was being supplied from a godown in Mauripur in Karachi to a local dealer. They demanded legal action against culprits for sale of spurious fertiliser. WATER SHORTAGE: Farmers of Doso Minor staged a protest demonstration here on Saturday at Market chowk to protest against irrigation water shortage in the minor. The Abadgar Action Forum Doulatabad had organised the protest. Mir Hassan Mari and Haji Mitho Mari led the protest. The protesters were carrying banners and placards and were demanding of the authorities to release water in the minor so that they could sow cotton and chilli crops. Speaking to the protesters, Sikiladho Rahimoon, Mohammad Nawaz Maher, Khair Mohammad Maher and Basheer Nohri said that their lands had become barren for 10 months due to sale of irrigation water to landlords whose lands are located at head of the water cannel and the irrigation officials were taking bribe. They said that they had failed to sow cotton and chilli crops due to acute water shortage while sowing began on April 1, in Sindh. They said that there were 65 watercourses at their channel and cultivation of lands was ensured on 30 watercourses at the head of the canal. They warned irrigation officials to refrain from corruption and ensure water supply to tail-end growers of Doso Shakh otherwise they would launch a protest campaign against them. They demanded of the Sindh chief minister, the governor and the secretary irrigation to take legal action against corrupt officials.
