30,000 disaster-resistant houses by 2018’

Urging all the stakeholders to come forward and join hands to create a disaster-resilient Odisha, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday said that in the aftermath of the Cyclone Phailin last year the Union Government and the World Bank have agreed to finance construction of 30,000 disaster-resistant houses from the years 2013 to 2018. “Construction of such houses is in progress through the project management unit of the OSDMA in the Phailin-affected districts of Ganjam, Puri and Khordha under the Odisha Disaster Recovery Project,” he said on the occasion of the Odisha Disaster Preparedness Day here. Patnaik said around 350 multipurpose cyclone and flood shelters have been constructed so far in disaster-prone areas while an additional 459 shelters are under construction, out of which 256 are being built with help from the CM’s Relief Fund. He praised the ODRAF and Fire Service personnel for their outstanding performance during Phailin, Hudhud and other natural calamities. Revenue and Disaster Management Min Bijayashree Routray and SRC Pradipta Kumar Mohapatra were present on the occassion.
