30,000 sq km of bamboo forests may be affected

Bamboo, the grass that can be used for anything and everything, is beset with a problem. It has been estimated that gregarious flowering will heavily affect the bamboo forests in south Assam, Mizoram and parts of Manipur by 2004-2007. Some 26 million tons of bamboo will die in this massive flowering. Government sources said, bamboo flowering which takes place at an interval of between 30 and 40 years, will affect 30,000 sq km of bamboo forest by 2007.
