Twenty-eight European countries, Canada and the US pledged on Wednesday to phase out leaded petrol by 2005 in a move that will demand costly changes in refinery techniques. The decision came during a summit of environment ministers from 54 nations across Europe, Central Asia and North America, held in Denmark's second city Aarhus, from Tuesday, June 23, through Thursday June 25.
