The fund-starved Water Resources department of Assam has managed to plug most of the breaches in the embankments, that occurred in the devastating floods last year, but no one can give guarantee that the embankment network in the State, which could not be raised and strengthened properly for years due to paucity of funds, will be able to withstand a fury of floods like last year. State Water Resources Department sources told The Assam Tribune today that as many as 354 breaches of embankments took place in floods last year and the Department managed to plug 347 of those breaches with funds allotted from the Calamity Relief Fund (CRF). The Department executed works worth Rs 130 crore so far this year and the Government has released Rs 30 crore till date. Sources said that of the seven breaches remain to be plugged, work is in progress to plug four and the progress was delayed because of the delay in land acquisition, while, three are yet to be plugged because of the same problem.
