Dhaka Around 40,000 people die of kidney failure each year in the country as about 95 per cent people cannot afford kidney treatment due to high cost, speakers said at a press conference on Thursday. Number of kidney patients across the world was increasing gradually and nearly 1.80 crore people were affected by chronic kidney disease in the country, said Dr Harun-Ur-Rashid, president of Kidney Foundation, at the press conference held at Dhaka Club. It was informed in press conference that Kidney Foundation Lottery-2008 would be launched from today to raise fund for establishing a state of the art kidney hospital at Mirpur in the capital. Considering sufferings of the affected people, the Kidney Foundation had been providing treatment to the poor patients since 2003. Kidney Foundation Adviser and National Professor MR Khan, eminent journalist Ataus Samad, media personality Aly Zaker and secretary of the foundation Prof M Muhibur Rahman, among others, addressed the press conference.
