After spiritual guru Morari Bapu played brand Ambassador to save the killing of whale shark by the fishermen, the forest department has sought help from the coast guard to monitor the movement of fishermen and check illegal killing of whale sharks in mid sea. The efforts of conservation seem to be already paying off. In the last three years around 42 whale sharks have been saved and this year only about 20-odd whale sharks have been saved so far. Additional chief principal conservator of forest, Pradeep Khanna, said this programme is turning out to be a major success and over 42 sharks have been saved since 2004 and of these over 22 were saved in this year already. He also said the coast guard which is patrolling in mid sea had also been roped in for preserving the whale sharks. The coast guard would monitor the movement of boats. Government is paying around Rs 20,000 as compensation for fishing net. But the actual cost of a net was around Rs 60,000. Officials said for a fisherman, nothing is perhaps more painful than to let go of a big catch with his own hands, especially if it happens to be a 30-feet whale shark that would fetch at least Rs 80,000.
