45-day annual ban on deep sea fishing begins in east coast

700 mechanised boats anchored in Rameswaram. The 45-day annual ban on deep sea fishing began on Sunday. The ban will be applicable to the fishermen from Kanyakumari to Chennai along the east coast and it is being implemented for undisturbed breeding . During the period the fisheries authorities will also undertake a few steps to increase the marine wealth. According to a report, more than 700 mechanised boats, which usually venture into the sea for fishing, have been anchored at the jetty in Rameswaram alone. Similarly, boats have also been anchored at jetties in Mandapam, Thangatchimadam, Kilakarai, Thondi, Pamban and others. Fish processing companies and most of the ice plants have also been closed temporarily. However, the country boats will continue to go for fishing in the sea as the ban does not include them. The fishing operation will resume on 30{+t}{+h}May.
