Altogether 469 cases of dengue fever have been reported in Male', Villimale' and Hulhumale' during the first four months of the year, the Department of Public Health (DPH) has said. The DPH also said that four cases of dengue fever had been reported in Hulhumale so far this week. Earlier the DPH had said that 90 cases of dengue fever had been reported during January this year and that the disease was spreading swiftly. According to the DPH records, with the exception of two atolls dengue fever has been reported in all the atolls in Maldives and 22 percent of the victims were under the age of 5. Hulhumale' Hospital also reported that several people were being tested for dengue fever currently at the Hospital. The Director General of IGMH Mohamed Ismail Fulhu said that there were several confirmed cases of dengue fever on the island. "We regularly get dengue fever patients here,' he said. "Everyone from adults to little children. However, at the moment there are only two children suffering from the disease admitted here. Not everyone we test turn out to be positive for dengue though. Sometimes it turns out to be a common viral fever. A week later he might turn positive for dengue.' Ismail said that mosquito breeding was being left unchecked in the island because so many construction areas have open ditches and pits filled with water that mosquitoes use for breeding grounds. "We can't even pour a layer of oil over the water in such ditches,' he said. "If this goes on the situation could become very dangerous.'
