Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh are expected to be the first states to send in proposals for urban development funds under the National Urban Renewal Mission launched by the Prime Minister last month. The ministry of urban development expects at least five to six proposals this year under the scheme. Sources said that while funds for urban development projects have been available under various schemes such as Integrated Development of Small and Medium Towns and Accelerated Water Supply Scheme, states have not been able to muster the technical capability to come up with schemes for sustained urban reform.
