In a recent census on tiger population carried out in Papikondalu wildlife sanctuary, forest wildlife management authorities identified the presence of five tigers, including four adults and a cub and 15 leopards. With the exception of the addition of a newly born cub to the existing tiger population, forest authorities did not confirm whether the number of tigers has gone up or dwindled in the sanctuary. However, they confirm that there were no reports of poaching of tigers in the sanctuary limits. The forest conservator (wildlife management), Mr S.K. Sinha, said, "We have carried out the tiger population census, based on norms recommended to carry out such exercises at the national level. Our people kept a tab on pug marks, litter and other evidence to substantiate the presence of wild animals in the sanctuary limits." Forest authorities have prepared proposals for setting up water sources for wild animals in certain select pockets of the forest areas, following recent cases of straying of big cats into human habitations. In the last few years, a series of such incidents took place where panthers strayed into civilian areas and created a scare among the general public. Recently, an adult male panther strayed into Rajahmundry city and took shelter in a bathroom of a house. Forest authorities trapped it and left it in the forests in the agency of Rampachodavaram. Though several reasons like disturbance in habitations due to construction activity of projects, inadequacy of prey for want of vegetation growth, lack of proper water sources, migration and others can be cited for wild animals, especially big cats straying into human habitations, forest authorities intend to set up water sources in areas visited by animals to quench their thirst. The areas will be selected where there are no water sources like creeks, rivulets and tanks and forest authorities will dig tanks or construct a check dam in case this helps to store water, dig a trench to store water and even set up concrete tanks. Water will be carried through tankers and these sources will be filled up with water wherever possible.
