In the midst of an acute power crisis, 60 megawatt of power has been added to Uttar Pradesh's kitty following the lightning up of Unit No.5 at the Harduaganj power station after a gap of nine years. The unit had closed down in 1999. After all these years now it has resumed generation of electricity. State Principal Secretary (Energy) V.N. Garg said here on Tuesday that the unit was refurbished with vigorous renovation and modernisation after the formation of the Bahujan Samaj Party government in the State. About Rs.33 crore was spent on the refurbishment of the Harduaganj power unit. Stating that the State Government had accorded top priority to increasing the generation capacity of the thermal power stations, the energy official said the Harduaganj unit had been synchronised and attached to the grid. Efforts are on now to synchronise Units No.1 and 2 of the Obra Thermal Power Station (OTPS) in Sonebhadra district of UP. These units have been lying closed for several years now. Once these units are lit up, an additional 100 MW of power would be available. Renovation and modernisation of Unit No.6 of Obra has also been undertaken and it is expected to begin generation of electricity soon. The unit was closed three years ago and around Rs.52 crore would be spent on its modernisation. Around 100 MW additional power would be available to the State. Mr. Garg said refurbishment work had also started on the thermal units of Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam which were over 20 years old. These measures had been taken in view of the wide gap between the availability of power from all sources and demand for electricity. He said the Government had prepared a long-term as well as a short-term plan to increase the generation capacity. A two-pronged strategy has been adopted to find a solution to the power crisis. Besides setting up new power plants, emphasis has been placed on reviving the old units, Mr. Garg added.
