600 fowls culled in Pabna

Over 600 domestic fowls including chickens, ducks and pigeons were culled at Ataikula in Pabna Sadar upazila at the early hours yesterday after detection of bird flue in a poultry farm, district livestock office (DLO) source said. The presence of the virus was first detected in a poultry firm owned by Md. Abdul Hannan of Ataikul on Tuesday. Livestock office sources told over 200 fowls were died in his farm in last two or three days. The livestock office collected the dead chickens and sent to Joypurhat Livestock Research Institute on March 2. After detecting the H5 virus in them, Joypurhat Livestock Research Institute sent the report to Savar Livestock Research Institute that confirmed the incidence of bird flu === virus, livestock office sources said. Following the report, officials and staff of district livestock office and local administration rushed the spot and culled 485 fowls and 953 eggs in Abdul Hannan's poultry farm on Tuesday night. The team also culled 26 other domestic fowls, seven ducks and 94 pigeons in adjoining houses and suggested people in surrounding areas to remain alert.
