Several thousand fowls were culled in Gazipur and Bogra as reports of chicken dying of bird flu kept pouring in from different parts of the country on Monday. Awareness raising campaigns initiated by various government and local authorities could not stop dumping of dead fowls in the open, risking public health in some areas. Over 6,000 fowls were culled in Gazipur and Bogra after laboratory tests confirmed bird flu outbreak at least in two firms in the districts. About 100 dead chickens were found floating in a canal at Tootpara Mowlabari area in Khulna city Monday morning. Khulna livestock officer Dr Obaidul Karim told New Age that they recovered the dead fowls with the help of local Poultry Owners' Association and buried those. He regretted the dumping of dead chicken despite the campaigns launched by the livestock department to make people and poultry farmers aware of the danger of leaving dead fowls in the open. Our Gazipur correspondent reports, more than 4,300 fowls including 3448 farm chickens were culled and 9,000 eggs destroyed Sunday night as bird flu was dictated in a poultry firm at Baliadi village under Kaliakoir upazila of the district. Domestic birds including about 200 pigeons, 400 hens and 300 ducks within one square kilometre radius of the village were also culled the same night. According to upazila livestock office, a total of 172 birds of Shila Moni Poultry Firm were found dead in last two days. Earlier, officials of the livestock department had sent samples to Dhaka and Savar laboratories. The reports confirmed that the birds died of avian influenza, prompting the authorities to initiate culling the fowls immediately. New Age correspondent reports from Bogra, 1,725 chickens were culled at Molla Poultry Farm and its adjoining areas at Khaliskandi. Chickens in the farm started dying since 4 February and laboratory tests confirmed bird flu attack in the farm.
