6.6 mn kids don’t live to see 5th birthday

The Child Health Now (CHN), Odisha on Monday organised a Mini Marathon from the Rupali Square to the IG Park to mark the Global Week of Action-Survive5. More than 500 people participated in the marathon which was inaugurated by BMC Mayor Ananta Naryan Jena. Bhubaneswar (North) MLA Priyadarsi Mishra and Tushar Kanti Ray also graced the occasion.The objective of the programme was to create awareness among the common people that a child’s survival up to its fifth birthday is very important. According to reports, more than 6.6 million children die every year and don’t observe fifth birthdays. While two million die on the day they are born, four million don’t make it to their first birthday, the reports say. Among others, CHN, Odisha convenor Gouranga Mohapatra, CHN director Newton Ijac, Sahyog secretary Bijayalaxmi Rautaray, World Vision’s Dharmendra Nayak, BGVS secretary Blorin Mohanty, social activist Bikram Swain, CCWD secretary Sadasib Swain were present. World Vision’s Sandip Giri gave vote of thanks.
