Rabindra Nath Choudhury The flash floods triggered by the depression over the Bay of Bengal have wrought havoc in Orissa killing at least seven people and affecting more than 10 lakh people. Around 1,400 villages in five districts have been marooned by the floods in major rivers like the Subarnarekha, the Budhabalanga and the Jalaka. The worst-hit districts were Balasore, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj and Jajpur. While four people died in Mayurbhanj district, three deaths were reported from Balasore district. Five others went missing after a truck in which they were travelling fell into a river after a bridge collapsed near Rupsa in Balasore district. "There are no traces of missing people even 24 hours after the incident," disaster management minister Manmohan Samal said here on Thursday. Chief minister Navin Patnaik undertook an aerial survey of flood-affected areas on Thursday morning even as thousands of people in the deluge-hit areas are going without food for the last two days. "We have started air dropping of food materials in the marooned areas. Besides, 50 boats have been pressed into service for relief and rescue operations. Twenty teams of Orissa disaster rapid action forces have been engaged for the job," Mr Samal said. Officials however conceded that the administration could not manage to reach thousands of victims due to the disruption of road communications and strong undercurrents of the flood water. "The situation remains grim as the rivers are still swelling," said the minister.
