80,000 homes destroyed in east Bihar

Shoumojit Banerjee PATNA: More than 80,000 homes were destroyed by the tropical storm that ripped through five districts of Bihar, and the death toll rose to 82. According to the latest reports, five more bodies were recovered in the affected districts. A third of the victims were children, including 17 of the 39 victims in Purnia district and 11 of the 33 killed in Araria. While the damage to the livestock was minimal, a few acres of maize and sunflower was affected by the tornado, of which velocity has been put at 100 kmph by the Meteorological Department. However, prompt action taken by the State government has helped. The authorities said the compensation for the affected farmers would be worked out soon. Speaking to reporters after a survey of Purnia and Araria, Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi said the ex-gratia of Rs. 1.5 lakh, promised by the government, was already handed over to most of the kin of the deceased.
