Roughly 8,500 Delhiites die due to pollution every year, states a study conducted by the World Health Organisation . Such alarming statistics and many more lend a perspective to the deteriorating environmental situation in the Capital. And, though the government has come up, in spurts, with measures to try and combnat the problem, the will to carry through occasionally harsh measures has been missing. Result: The problem just keeps getting worse, Every so often over the last five years the Delhi government clucked with concern about increasing pollution levels in the Capital. But it was the Union environment ministry and the Supreme court that played a more active role in suggesting relevant measures.
