Some 90 illegal plants are playing with the health of Noida residents by supplying impure drinking water. No norms or quality checks are being followed by these companies in manufacturing and marketing bottled water to people nor there is any supervision of this trade by health or other government agencies. Some companies are known to be using the empty bottles of some reputed mineral water brands to sell their poisonous product. Over 9 lakh bottles are daily supplied through 45,000 bottles of 20-litre each by 90 bottling units in Noida. Most of the bottles marketed in the town have duplicate labels and even ISI markers. According to sources, so profuse is the influx of illegal mineral water bottles in the city that one cannot make out which is duplicate. According to one source, since the duplicate bottle manufacturers offer higher commission to retailers, they are tempted to palm off the duplicate water bottles which are a great health hazard to the people. The duplicate bottling plants offer double the commission, say Rs 10 to 15 as against Rs 5 to Rs 7 for a 20-litre bottle, the unscrupulous shopkeepers are also in league with the illegal manufacturers.
