The Public Health Engineering Department has launched a massive programme for exploration of ground water, especially in the Kandi areas of Jammu, for augmentation of potable supply. Under this programme, 62 tube wells and 967 hand pumps have already been installed in Jammu division during the past five years, adding around 3 crore gallons of potable water to the supply line. During the year 2001-02, Rs 5 crore each were earmarked for exploration of ground water in Jammu and Kashmir divisions.
