The book gives a comprehensive account of the pre and post independence activities regarding the Narmada Valley development till 2011
Narmada Valley development has been an issue of debate, nation wide. This got momentum when first Prime Minister of the country Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru put forth his model of development through building large dams to create irrigation potential for increasing agriculture production.
Jawaharlal Nehru model inspired the planners and engineers to plan large dams over Narmada and its tributaries. With the emergence of new States after independence, dispute among Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra surfaced. Later on, Rajasthan also associated with the dispute.
The dispute was over the sharing of water available in Narmada basin. The Government of India constituted Narmada Water Dispute Tribunal in 1969. The tribunal could come to final allocation of Narmada water only after 10 years' long exercise with Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan. In due course of time, the development of Narmada Valley started in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan amid opposition from the social activists and NGOs like Narmada Bachao Andolan.
Thus the story of Narmada Valley development is full of events. Author of the book Adil Khan finely attempted to encompass the total story of Narmada for the first time in a book titled — Vivad, Virodh aur Vikas ki Narmada.
The book gives comprehensive account of the pre and post independence activities of Narmada Valley development till 2011. This also gives interesting account of the arguments by the party States before the tribunal. The account of the cold-war between Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh over the height of Sardar Sarovar Dam discloses the political compulsions of the politicians and the political parties.
The book covers each and every aspect associated with the development of the valley like rehabilitation and resettlement, protection of archeological monuments, navigation through major reservoirs, religious tourism etc. Khan has had long association with the Narmada Valley development activities. The author is presently the joint director in Narmada Valley development of Madhya Pradesh.
