As the Union Ministry for Surface Transport delays notification of propane as a permitted automotive fuel and development of codes and standards for automotive application of propane, the Delhi Govenrment's ambitious project of converting the Capital's 75,000-odd autorickshaws to the world's greenest fuel remains where it has been for nearly two years - on the paper. The Supreme Court also directed the constitution of the Justice K.N. Saikia Committee to make as assessment of technologies and alternatives available to reduce emission both on a long term and short term basis, apart from recommending administrative and legal framework for implementation of low-cost, low-emission fuel for public transport.G & T Resources Worldwide had proposed to bring in Canadian technology to convert petrol and diesel-run autho-rickshaws to propane-run models, and the joint venture G&T Yugo Tech submitted the techno-commercial feasibility of the project to the Court after the Saikia committee visited its facility in Mississauga, Canada and concluded that propane would be the ideal fuel for Delhi's autorickshaws.
