A monorail will chug in BKC

The total cost of the project is estimated to be Rs1,125 crore for the four-km long route Even as the fate of the first-ever monorail project in the country hangs in mid air, the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) has come up with a second proposal to construct a 4-km monorail connecting Bandra-Kurla-Complex (BKC) and Bandra station (East). The proposal will be put up in the authority meeting to be held on Wednesday. Additional Metropolitan Commissioner Milind Mhaiskar confirmed the proposal to construct Monorail from BKC. According to the proposal, a copy of which is with DNA, within next two-three months, Bharat Diamond Bores project (A huge diamond market) in BKC will be fully functional. Once the project starts, the number of commuters, during peak hours, is expected to go up by at least 40,000. The business community in BKC has already put up a demand to improve the public transport within the complex. In the first phase, a 4-km monorail will be constructed in the next 18 months. It will be followed by the second phase which will stretch till government colony and Bandra Terminus. It will be 4-km long and will take three years to be completed. The total cost of this project is estimated to be Rs1,125 crore. MMRDA has already constructed a 1.3-km-long skywalk from Bandra station (east) till Kalanagar Junction. The process to construct the second phase of metro railway from Charkop-Bandra-Mankhurd has already begun.
