Breaking out of the colonial hangover, the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) has decided to take a more Indian approach to conserving heritage. An attempt to take into account the peculiar Indian situation which is not only about building but ways of building, INTACH adopted a Charter for the Conservation of Unprotected Architectural Heritage and Sites recently. "The situation in India is very different. Heritage in India is not only about the building, but a way of life. There is a link between intangible and tangible heritage. There are traditions associated with these buildings and we have a living tradition of crafts, which might get lost. The Charter looks at how we can define the peculiarity of Indian traditions so that we can preserve the building as well as the ways of building and keep alive these skills,'' stated the architect of the Charter A.G.K Menon at a press conference here today.
