Dumping of solid waste and garbage by the banks of the Kalang and the Morikalang is one of the main reasons of water pollution in the region, although people here have been using the water of these rivers for drinking since ages. The polluted water has caused many serious diseases and has badly affected the health of the people here. Situated in the heart of Nagaon town is Dowson HS School in ward no. 10 near RK Road and MG Road. There is a pond in the backyard of the school, which has been leased out to the fishery department. However, neither the school authority nor the fishery department nor the district administration along with the municipal board is interested in maintenance of the pond. As a result of this neglect, the condition of the pond has deteriorated to such an extent that it has polluted the entire surroundings. It may be mentioned here that solid waste and water from the drains of most of the houses in the area are being let out into the pond, due to the drainage system in the area, which in turn has polluted the pond water. The foul smell emanating from the polluted water in the pond has made life miserable for the people. Moreover, the pond had no boundary walls, and during the rainy season, waste flows from the different areas of ward nos. 9,10 and 11 into this pond. It may be mentioned here that the NGOs of Nagaon have submitted several memoranda to the Chief Minister, district administration, Nagaon Municipal Board, with a request to construct a boundary wall near the pond, and to clean it, if possible. A request was also made to replace the sluice gate near the Morikalang Masjid, so that the polluted water of the Morikalang does not flow back to the town. The NGOs also requested the school authority to clean the pond regularly and to find out ways to divert the drain water and solid waste from the vicinity of the pond. The NGOs have put forward the example of Dighalipukhuri in Guwahati, which had been quite polluted earlier, and which, at present, has been cleansed and is one of the famous tourist spots in the region.
