The findings of the census of children for 2002 bring little cheer to those in charge of bringing down the dropout rate in primary schools. Since the dropout rate is quite high in six districts of the integrated parts of Karnataka and is over 10 per cent amount the socially vulnerable segments of the population, the authorities and policy-makers concerned cannot derive much satisfaction from the fact that the overall dropout rate has declined by about 3 per cent since last year....editorial
