Mixed-race aborigines taken as children from their parents under an obsolete policy of enforced sepration suffered cruelty unsurpassed in recent Australian history. Senior counsel Jack Rush told the Federal Court that members of Australia's "stolen generation" of aboriginal children had suffered as a consequence of attempts by the governments of the day to assimilate them into white society.
